The grandparent adoption process is often less complicated than non-relative, newborn adoptions. Courts generally want to keep children with biological relatives. Therefore, grandparent adoptions generally require abbreviate home studies, thus the adoption process goes much quicker.

Many grandparents choose to adoption so that they can provide health insurances, receive subsidized housing that includes the child, and enroll their grandchildren in school. When older grandparents adopt their grandchildren, they must consider their health and financial ability to care for the child.
